Most Lake Como day-trip itineraries are fantasy schedules that ignore travel time, ferry capacity, and the summer crowds. This one doesn't. Two routes, honest timings, local restaurant picks, and how to make the day feel like more than a tick-box.
The most common Lake Como day-trip itinerary on the internet tries to squeeze Como city, Bellagio, Varenna and Tremezzo into a single day. It sounds achievable until you look at a ferry timetable and realise you'd spend most of that day waiting at docks or moving between places without spending real time in any of them.
This guide is built differently. Two itineraries, both realistic, both flowing in one direction through the lake. Within each one, the stops are presented as options - pick two or three that appeal, not all of them. A slower day in fewer places is always better than a rushed circuit of everything.
The rule that makes everything work
Before anything else: flow in one direction through the lake. Never backtrack to your entry point.
If you arrive at Como city, work north through the western shore and return from Varenna. If you arrive at Varenna, work through the central lake and either return from Varenna or continue west to Como for the evening. What doesn't work is arriving at one end of the lake, travelling to the other, and retracing the same journey home.
Both itineraries below are built on this logic. For full train route details and ferry ticket guidance, see our Milan to Lake Como by train guide.
Itinerary A - Western shore to central lake
(Train to Como city, return from Varenna)
This itinerary suits visitors who want to spend time in Como city itself before working north through the western shore villages.
Getting there: Train from Milan Cadorna to Como Nord Lago (approximately 60 minutes, right on the waterfront) or from Milan Central to Como San Giovanni (35-40 minutes, 1km inland). Buy your ferry ticket at the dock ticket office before boarding - not online, not on board. In peak season, arrive at the dock 30-60 minutes early.
Como city - allow 1.5 to 2 hours
Como is an ancient Roman colony - Julius Caesar granted it Roman citizenship, and Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger were both born here. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the medieval walls, the silk museum and the lakefront promenade are all within easy walking distance of Como Nord Lago. Most day-trippers walk straight to the ferry without stopping. Don't.
For those interested in a cooking class experience in the city before heading out on the water, see our Lake Como experiences.
Western shore: pick two or three stops
Take the passenger ferry (battello) north from Como Lago terminal. The slow service stops at the smaller villages - this is the one to take for the western shore, not the fast hydrofoil. Choose the stops that interest you most:
- Cernobbio - first major stop north of Como. The lakefront and the famous Onda bar, recommended for aperitivo - on Thursdays it runs as a nightlife venue too.
- Torno - a quiet village with a small harbour and good views back towards Como city.
- Argegno - halfway up the western shore. Gelato di Zoe for the best ice cream on the lake. P'Osteria for lunch - meat and serious wines, not a tourist restaurant. And in the late afternoon, the sunset aperitivo on a classic wooden boat departs from here - the most atmospheric way to end a western shore day.
- Laglio - a genuinely local stop. Locanda del Cantiere for high-quality local recipes. Da Luciano - part aperitivo bar, part local grocery selling oil, cheese, cured meat and wines favoured by the people who actually live on the lake.
- Lezzeno - Aurora is the restaurant recommendation that comes with the strongest caveat: book weeks in advance in peak season, not days. If you have a reservation, this is the meal of the trip.
You won't get to all of these in a day - nor should you try. Two or three stops, done properly, is the right approach.
Afternoon on the water - optional
ComoTour operates private boat departures from Como city. If you want to see the western shore villas from the lake - Villa d'Este, Balbianello, Carlotta - the way they were designed to be seen, an afternoon on the water delivers what the ferry can't. Book a private boat from Como here. Not sure which experience fits your day? Browse all departure points on the homepage map.
Evening: ferry to Bellagio or continue to Varenna
From the central western shore (Tremezzo or Menaggio), take the cross-lake ferry to Bellagio for the evening - arriving after the midday crowds have thinned. Punta Spartivento at the tip of the Bellagio headland at dusk is one of the best free views on the lake. See our Bellagio guide for what to do with an evening hour there.
Return: Train from Varenna-Esino to Milan Central, approximately 50-60 minutes. Trains run regularly into the evening.
Itinerary B - Central lake to western shore
(Train to Varenna, optional return from Como city)
This itinerary suits visitors who want to start at the central lake - Varenna, Bellagio, the Triangolo Lariano - and optionally end the day in Como city.
Getting there: Train from Milan Central to Varenna-Esino, approximately 50-60 minutes. Shuttle bus to the waterfront on arrival, or walk down in 15 minutes.
Varenna - allow 1.5 to 2 hours
Early morning Varenna is one of the best experiences the lake offers. The passeggiata before the ferry traffic arrives, Villa Monastero gardens nearly empty, the lanes quiet. If your legs allow it, the climb to the Castello di Vezio (25 minutes up) gives you the best elevated view of the central lake. For the full guide, see our Varenna in one day guide.
Bellagio - allow 1.5 to 2 hours
The 15-minute ferry crossing from Varenna to Bellagio is one of the most enjoyable short journeys on the lake. In Bellagio, walk to Punta Spartivento at the tip of the headland - the only land viewpoint where you can see both branches of the lake simultaneously. Villa Melzi gardens on the southern lakefront are worth an hour. Eat off the main promenade. See our Bellagio itinerary for the full detail.
Afternoon on the water - optional
ComoTour operates private boat departures from Varenna. The central lake from the water - the Balbianello headland, the villa facades in afternoon light, the quieter eastern coves - is a different experience from anything on land. Book a private boat from Varenna here. For a breakdown of what the boat gives you that the ferry doesn't, see our ferry vs private boat guide.
Optional: continue to Como city for the evening
If you have the energy and want to end the day in Como rather than returning from Varenna, take the ferry south along the western shore. Grand Hotel Tremezzo at Tremezzo is worth a stop for an aperitivo or dinner on the terrace - book ahead. Continue to Como city for the evening, which is quieter and more pleasant once the day-tripper traffic has cleared.
Return: From Varenna-Esino to Milan Central (50-60 minutes), or from Como San Giovanni or Como Nord Lago to Milan (35-60 minutes depending on service).
Getting there by private transfer
If you're arriving from Milan Malpensa or Linate airports, or travelling as a group with luggage, a private transfer removes the train logistics entirely and drops you directly at the waterfront. ComoTour works with a network of 150+ local private drivers. Contact us directly to arrange your transfer to Como city or Varenna.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you really do Lake Como in one day from Milan?
Yes - with a well-planned itinerary it's one of the best day trips in northern Italy. The key is choosing one route and a handful of stops, not trying to cover the whole lake. One well-executed day in two or three places is significantly better than rushing through six.
Should I base my day trip around Bellagio or Varenna?
Both itineraries above include both villages. If you had to prioritise one arrival point: Varenna is faster by train from Milan and quieter in peak season. Bellagio has the more famous scenery and the best panoramic viewpoint on the lake. The ferry crossing between the two takes 15 minutes - they're easily combined in a single morning.
What should I eat on a Lake Como day trip?
The best local picks by village: Gelato di Zoe in Argegno for ice cream, P'Osteria in Argegno for lunch, Aurora in Lezzeno if you've booked weeks ahead, Locanda del Cantiere in Laglio for local recipes, Da Luciano in Laglio for aperitivo and local produce, Onda in Cernobbio for lakefront aperitivo, Grand Hotel Tremezzo for a VIP terrace experience.
Is a private boat worth it on a one-day trip from Milan?
Yes - and particularly so when you only have one day, because there's no tomorrow to defer the decision to. An afternoon on the water starting at 2pm or 3pm fits naturally into either itinerary and gives you the lake from the perspective that the ferry can't - the villas close up, the quiet coves, the afternoon light. ComoTour operates departures from both Como and Varenna - browse options at comotour.com/tours.
How do I buy ferry tickets on Lake Como?
At the ticket office at the ferry dock on the day - there is no advance online booking for standard Navigazione Lago di Como services. In peak season, arrive 30-60 minutes before your intended departure to ensure you get on the crossing you want.
